How to Advocate for the Animals Of South Africa Through Outreach and Rescue Organisations
As animal lovers, we all want to make a difference in the lives of animals in need. In South Africa, there are many animal outreach and rescue organisations that work tirelessly to provide care, shelter, and love to homeless and distressed animals. These organisations rely on the support of individuals and communities to continue their important work. In this blog post, we explore some of the ways you can support animal outreach and rescue organisations in South Africa.
Donate
This is certainly one of the most straightforward ways to support animal outreach and rescue organisations. Whether it’s a one-time donation or a recurring monthly donation, every little bit helps. Donations can be used to cover the costs of food, veterinary care, and shelter for animals in need. Some organisations also have “sponsor a pet” programmes, where you can sponsor a specific animal and help cover their care costs. Donating blankets, beds food and toys is another way to keep these animals comfortable and warm while they wait for their forever home.
Volunteer
Another way to support animal outreach and rescue organisations is to volunteer your time. Many organisations need help with tasks such as animal care, dog walking, fundraising, and event planning. Volunteering is a great way to get involved and make a difference in the lives of animals. I volunteer for The WOW Project here in Melkbos, whose founder, Kerry, works tirelessly in the Wolwerivier and Atlantis areas, arranging sterilisation drives, teaching people about proper pet care, distributing tick and flea preventative meds and taking sick or injured animals to various vets in the area who help so much by offering “rescue rates”.
Foster
Fostering involves temporarily caring for an animal in need in your own home. This can be a great way to help an animal transition from a shelter or rescue situation to a permanent home. Fostering can also help socialize animals and prepare them for adoption. Most organisations rely on foster families to provide temporary care for animals, especially during peak holiday seasons. By fostering an animal, you are not only helping to provide a temporary home, but also helping to make space for another animal to be rescued. It’s a great way to make a difference in the life of an impoverished animal while also giving you the opportunity to experience the joys of having a pet without a long-term commitment.
Adopt
Adopting an animal from an animal outreach or rescue organization is another way to make a huge difference. By providing a loving home to a needy animal, not only are you showing kindness and compassion, but you’re also creating an opportunity for another animal to be rescued and given a chance at a better life. And, take it from someone who knows…adopting a rescue animal WILL change your life for the better!
Support Local Businesses
Many local businesses in South Africa support animal outreach and rescue organisations by donating a portion of their profits. By supporting these businesses, you are indirectly supporting the organisations they donate to. With this in mind, Dog Mom will, for the month of February, be donating 100% of our profits from our new Dog Bandanas and our Car Decals to The WOW Project, to help Kerry continue her amazing work.
Spread the Word
Lastly, spreading awareness about animal outreach and rescue organisations is another way to support their work. Share information about the organisations on social media, tell your friends and family about the work they do, and encourage others to get involved.
Some well-known animal outreach and rescue organisations in South Africa include:
The NSPCA (National Council of SPCA)
Animal Anti-Cruelty League
Four Paws
Here in Cape Town, where Dog Mom is based, you can also support:
The WOW Project
LEAPS
African Tails
TEARS (The Emma Animal Rescue Society)
D.A.R.G
Fallen Angels
By supporting animal outreach and rescue organisations in South Africa, we can make a difference in the lives of animals in need. Whether it’s through donations, volunteering, fostering, adopting, supporting local businesses, or spreading awareness, every little bit counts. These organisations work tirelessly to provide care, shelter, and love to animals in need, and they rely on the support of individuals and communities to continue their important work. So, next time you’re looking for a way to make a difference, consider supporting one of these organisations. You’ll be helping to make the world a better place for animals in South Africa and showing your love for animals.
Feel free to tag the rescue organisation YOU support to showcase what they do to help animals in need.
Don’t forget, if you buy a Dog Bandana or Car Decal from Dog Mom in February, we’ll donate 100% of the proceeds to The WOW Project.

This is such a fantastic initiative! Thank you Dog Mom 🐾.
I have been volunteering at DARG in Hout Bay for 7 years and can say that it has been the most humbling and rewarding experience of my life. The staff work tirelessly to help animals in need and often have to deal with very difficult situations and people. Fund raising is an ongoing exercise as dog food and vet bills run into the R100 000’s every month and they need all the support they can get. Forgo one cup of coffee a month and it will make a difference. If you can’t afford to donate, shelter dogs need to be walked and need human love and attention. Please help where you can. Thank you Dog Mom for this fantastic offer ❤️
Thank you so much for your kind words, Christy and of course, for all you do for the animals of DARG. I am blessed to know so many people who advocate for the animals in so many different ways. I am in awe of people who can go into impoverished areas, with dogs who are neglected and help them. I am not strong enough to do that (and am so grateful for the people who are), but there are so many ways in which we can help.
