National Dog Mom Day: From Fur Babies to Family
13 May 2023 – National Dog Mom Day – the day we celebrate Dog Moms!
Ah, the “dog mom”. What a fascinating creature. For those of you who aren’t in the know, a dog mom is an informal and affectionate term for a dog lover that identifies as female and believes that her pets are “fur kids”. Yes, you read that right. She treats her furry friends like actual human children. If you’re sitting there now rolling your eyes, you’re probably not a dog mom.
What makes a dog mom?
So, what makes dog mom a dog mom. It’s not just about having a dog or two (or even five). It’s about the way she treats her dogs. A dog mom doesn’t just feed her dogs and give them a pat on the head every now and then. Oh no, that would be far too simple. A dog mom takes her job very seriously. She spends countless hours researching the best food, treats, toys, and even clothes for her beloved pets. She takes them on walks, plays with them, cuddles with them, checks their health by monitoring their toilet habits and generally treats them like the royalty they are.
This may sound odd to someone who isn’t a dog mom, but I can bet that all the dog mom’s reading this are nodding with a smile on their face. Dogs are basically tiny furry angels. They love us unconditionally, they never judge us, and they’re always there to make us feel better when we’re feeling down. So, is it really that crazy to want to give them the best life possible? I think not.
The challenges of being a dog mom
But being a dog mom isn’t all rainbows and sunshine. It also comes with its own unique set of challenges. For example, have you ever tried to take a family photo with a dog? It’s basically impossible. You’ll be lucky if you can get everyone to look in the same general direction, let alone smile at the camera. And don’t even get me started on trying to get a dog to sit still long enough to put on a cute outfit. It’s like trying to wrangle a tiny tornado.
Then there’s the issue of leaving your fur kids home alone. A dog mom will spend hours worrying about whether her dogs are bored, lonely, or just generally sad without her. She’ll leave the TV on for them, give them toys to play with, and maybe even set up a camera (or, in my case, 5) so she can check in on them throughout the day. And if she has to leave them for an extended period of time, the guilt can be overwhelming.
But the challenges are all worth it when you see the love and happiness in your dogs’ eyes. They may not be able to tell you with words, but they show their appreciation in other ways. (You’ve never had another family member THAT excited to see you get home from work)! Whatever it is, it’s enough to make a dog mom’s heart burst with love and pride.
The dog mom community
And let’s not forget about the community of dog moms. There’s nothing quite like bonding with someone over your shared love of dogs. Whether it’s at the dog park, on social media, or at a local meetup, dog moms have a way of finding each other and forming tight-knit friendships. They’ll swap stories about their dogs, offer advice, and generally support each other in all things dog-related. It’s a pretty amazing support system.
Celebrating dog moms
Now, you might be wondering if being a dog mom is really all that different from being a regular dog owner. And the answer is yes, it is. Because being a dog mom isn’t just about taking care of your dogs. It’s about loving them like they’re your own children, and treating them with the same level of care and attention. It’s about recognizing that dogs aren’t just pets, but members of the family.
In fact, being a dog mom is so different from being a regular dog owner that it even comes with its own special holiday. That’s right, there’s a day set aside specifically to honor dog moms. It’s called National Dog Mom’s Day, and it’s celebrated on the second Saturday in May. It’s a day to recognize all the hard work, love, and dedication that dog moms put into their furry friends.
So, what does a dog mom do on National Dog Mom’s Day? Well, she might take her dogs on a special outing, like a trip to the beach or a hike in the mountains. She might buy them a new toy or treat, or even make them a special homemade meal. But mostly, she just spends the day basking in the love and appreciation of her beloved fur kids.
Now, I know what you might be thinking. “This all sounds a little crazy. Dogs are just animals, after all. They don’t need all this fuss.” But here’s the thing: dogs are more than just animals. They’re companions, friends, and yes, even family members. And for those of us who identify as dog moms, that means treating them with the same level of love and care that we would give to any other family member.
So, the next time you see a woman walking down the street with her dogs in tow, don’t roll your eyes or scoff at her. Instead, recognize the love and dedication that she’s putting into caring for her furry friends. She might be a little crazy, sure, but she’s also a whole lot of awesome.
In conclusion, being a dog mom is about more than just owning a dog. It’s about loving and caring for your pets like they’re members of the family. It comes with its own unique set of challenges, but the love and appreciation you get in return is more than worth it. So, to all the dog moms out there, keep on loving your fur kids and being the awesome, dedicated, and slightly crazy people that you are. We salute you!
